FLOR INSTALLATION
LOCATION / ATLANTA, GEORGIA
PROJECT TYPE / INSTALLATION

Interface Flor, the modular carpet tile manufacturer, hosted Interior Design Magazine Idea Lab in September 2009 at their Atlanta manufacturing facility and Awarehouse.  Interior Design magazine selected six designers to each create an installation using Interface Flor products and raw materials within a 20x20 footprint (located in the Interface Awarehouse) and six weeks.

We immediately determined to make something impactful that featured only the company’s signature product on all visible surfaces as we felt this was the purest response to the brief.  Programmatically, we sought to create an installation that was ambiguous: simultaneously acting as a lounge, a display, an optical experiment.  On a playful note, we found it interesting that their signature product, Flor, means “flower” in Spanish and were interested in making a reference to this in the installation.

Ultimately, we embraced the compact footprint and mirrored all the walls to play with the close proximity and irregular footprint.  Stepped, radial  platforms that recall flowers are built in quarter circles and the mirrored enclosure completes and reflects the flowers infinitely.  An entire virtual “flower” is created at the reentrant corner on the interior, from the reflections of the adjacent quadrants.  The entire installation is made of plywood platforms, mirrored walls and Interface Flor carpet tiles.
