SOKUL HOUSE
LOCATION / MILLBROOK, NY
PROJECT TYPE / HOMES
3D VISUAL ARTIST / LIGHT MATTER

As part of a private residential compound, the Millbrook SoKul House is situated in a 40 acre sloped meadow along a scenic, meandering woodland. In contrast to the soft form of the landscape, the house takes on a sharp geometry defined by the angular roof profile. The charred wood siding accentuates the strong silhouette of the house and casts a tranquil energy over the surrounding.

The west facade seamlessly transitions into an attached garage, creating a private entry niche. This niche connects to guest parking through a beautifully landscaped garden, offering a warm welcome into the home while the surrounding vegetation enhances privacy.

The east facade features a series of large windows that provide visual connection to an expansive forest view. An outdoor cedar deck wraps around the corner and offers a great gathering space with easy access to both indoor and outdoor kitchens.

The second floor cantilevers out on the south end above the outdoor kitchen. The subdued cedar cladding makes the second floor charred wood volume appear to be floating. The cluster of small windows at the bunk room adds drama to the nightfall.

The house is designed to reduce energy consumption and meet the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Homes (ZERH) program in its siting, orientation, glazing strategy and energy usage. This home will consume zero energy with electrical power supplied by a solar array.

We had the privilege of designing the pool house as a natural extension of the homeowners' living space. Maintaining the lush, vibrant landscape was central to our organic design approach. The pool house functions as an additional lounge and living area, perfect for both entertaining and relaxation.
